Picked this up at a flea market last weekend for US $10
(about £7.70):

1970-UK-Proof-Mint-Set 1970-UK-Proof-Mint-Set

It didn't come with the box or COA and the case is cracked a bit, but it was shiny and cool-looking and I figured it was worth spending a little money on. I've never collected U.K. coins before, so I thought these might contain some silver, but obviously I was wrong.

Anyway, just thought I'd share some eye candy!

Thanks, jbuck! And, now that I know what country this actually from, I was able to do a little research and discovered that it's the last "pre-decimal" set that was made by The Royal Mint. The full name of the set is "THE COINAGE OF THE U.K. OF GREAT BRITAIN & NORTHERN IRELAND" and it contains a Florin, a Half Crown, an English Shilling, a Six Pence, a Scottish Shilling, a Threepence, a Penny and a Half Penny.

Certainly a nice set to have. Interesting that they have two different shillings in it. I do not know much about that, so I assume someone will comment.

The shilling with 3 lions is the English design, the other the Scots. They both circulated freely throughout the UK.

Fair enough, but why this denomination and not the others, was it because of some historical significance?

I have one of these with a die crack on the half crown. Can't find anything about how much it could be worth.

The sets with perfect pack and info can be bought retail for about £20. Although I have amassed over half a doz sets bought for less than £10.
A die crack would probably be a negative.Bad toning on the copper is also not good. Hence you see many single coins from this set on ebay...A hearty meal at MacDonald's (if such a thing exists) is your answer.
