I am assuming that this red/gold eagle was placed on the bill sometime after going into circulation?

I have a lead from another source which suggests that is the marking done at a currency exchange to signify that the bill is genuine. If that is true there should be a catalog of markings somewhere - anyone heard of this?

They are called "chopmarks" - Google it if interested - it is a world I never had heard of!

"Chopmarks" is correct. I have seen many different ones but have never taken the time to study them. I'd be interested in the input of other rag pickers as well.
