Hello My name is Sandy, my uncle passed and left my family coins, I have done some research and have found out there are some so rare that a coin dealer didn't know what they were, they are france 5 centimes gold proof piedfort, there is also 10 centimes and a huge 50 that weighs 3oz. There are way to many to write down here. Also there are a couple sets of four Chinese winter Olympic 1980 sterling silver lake placid coins. Any help is appreciated Thanks

Make the list and take the pictures. If that's too much trouble, take what the dealer offers.
Not trying to be rude, but if you want to protect an investment it will take some work.
Maybe start with a picture of the pile and we'll help you chip away at it. It doesn't have to be done all at once.
You've come to the right place Sandy, so let's get started.
And don't touch the coin surfaces, only rims, and with chemical free hands.

To CCF , just try to be patient , If you can take a few photos of some of the coins and list a few here, someone with knowledge about these coins will come forward and help you out . In the mean time your son ( Drew ) should be a great help to you with this task .

The Paris Mint made a ton of low mintage issues in the late 70s, including Piedfort (double thick planchets) of circulations coins, and making circulation coins from precious metals. There is a limited market for these things, but the 50 Franc Piedforts with the Hercules group on front do have their collectors, but you see many sitting unsold.

If you have the Certificates of Authenticity, it would go a long way toward determining what you actually have. The NGC site has a pretty good world coin resource, but don't expect to paid the prices in the guide. The rarest coins are not always the most valuable -- demand is a much more important part of the equation than supply.

She posted about these in another forum. The French pieces are 1975 gold piedforts. She said the dealer she took them to cut one of the gold 5 centimes pieces (mintage 45 pieces) in half to make sure it was gold. No big deal, losing one she had 20 of them. (She had 20 pieces of a coin with a mintage of 45?)

What dealer would cut a coin in half to determine if it is real? That is the craziest thing I've ever heard. Was it maybe a pawn shop and not a real coin dealer I wonder?

I think something here is not exactly right. There is no 50 Franc coin that weighs 3 ounces. And who would cut a coin in half? Not only is it crazy, it doesn't give you the purity, and who keeps equipment on hand to do that? That's nuts!

And the dealer that cut it in half told her it was 14k. I think she omitted that here because of how it topic bombed the other thread. I found that strangly amazing as well conder. That her relative had half the mintage. Maybe he really liked them and decided to go all mini Hunt Brothers with them

I don't necessarily trust those low mintage numbers from some of these issues. For example, you will see MANY, MANY more certified coins that the total reported mintage for some Polish mint issues.

But putting that aside, it is safe to say the inquiry that began this thread cannot be entirely legitimate.
