I'm new to coin roll hunting. I've no idea how to do it. Do I just buy a roll of coins from the bank and look through it? Thanks for any help!

Thats the jist of it. Depending on how much cash you have to let sit will depend on what type of coin you would be best off for. Which ever you decide look on google or on different forums on here to assist with what types of coints to keep. With the pre 65 dimes, quarters and halves. Of course you want to keep them since they are silver. But with all the different denominations there are going to be whats called Key date coins. Which will hold a premium. There are also error coins to look for. My recomondation would be to go ahead and pick a denomination you want to search. Then do a little research on what are you wanting to keep. Are you going for silver. Are you going for older higher grade coins to fill a book, or are you looking for errors. The key thing is what ever you pick have fun. And welcome to the hunt.

You got the idea. For a coin collector it is a way of getting to see many coins and only paying face value for the ones you keep. I prefer to get a box of coins for what ever denomination I am searching. You will want to find a bank to "dump" your searched coins. My local credit union allows me to dump in their coin machine up to $200 per day without a charge. I get my money back and do it again :)

Garoyn, best response ever hahahahahh

Nickruler, start small with purchases of rolls of coins, whether machine wrapped, or customer wrapped. Figure out your capabilities to dump. If you can do more, start to ramp it up, open more accts at different banks, but thats only if you can get rid of it and have time etc. Start small and get bigger if you like to.
Rest in Peace

Yes, we need to be careful with how we use our words when referring to the banks.

Agreed, never say "hit up a bank". Especially when in a bank.

Buy, beg, borrow, or steal a copy of "The Official Red Book" A Guide Book of United States coins. A new edition is printed every year. It has photos and descriptions of US coins and it's a good place to start your research. And if you want to expand your collection to mint sets, proof sets, uncirculated sets, commemoratives, etc,.. the information is there.

I know it is just a phrase, but we have somehow gone from hitting up banks to robbing book owners.
