Go-Ahead-And-Ask-Your-Teller-For-Eisenhower-Dollars:-Found-In-RollsCoinWorld - Whenever I go to my local bank or credit union to obtain rolls of coins like cents, 5-cent coins or dimes, I will also ask for any unusual coins that might be available.

You might not be aware of the fact that many banks keep a small box in their vault that contains non-U.S. coins or tokens that may have emerged from rolls as they operate their daily business. Ask your teller if they do indeed have such a box and ask for the coins that might be contained therein and see what happens!

You just might be surprised at the result. They might simply give you a blank stare, indicating that they think you're squirrel bait or they might actually offer you some unusual coins to add to your collection.

A good article, and not just because there is an Eisenhower dollar so prominently located. I hope it will inspire more than a handful of you to start asking if you have never asked before.

I routinely ask for large dollars (they call them "BO Dollars" down in the south) and 9+/10 times it's a no. But every so often they have one or a few. I accumulated several hundred Ikes this way over the years, including some tough Friendly Eagle 71D varieties and some nice AU-BU coins.

So keep asking. Sometimes you will get them.

However, I also tried asking them to order them- they are supposed to be still available from the Federal Reserve. I have seen some threads on people here on CCF that have gotten them successfully ordered. But not where I live.

Whenever I ask a teller for any unusual coins I get the usual response "What do you mean by unusual" How do you explain unusual so don't spend your lunch hour trying to explain yourself?

Why not just carry a few examples in your pocket? Makes things much simpler.

Before I quit roll hunting a year or so ago, I turned down a teller's offer of 160 Ike dollars, which I had always bought in the past. What was I thinking?

I always ask for large dollars and usually pick up a few every month from tellers, they don't have them often but who knows maybe I'll hit the jackpot one day. Picked up 8 Eisenhower's last week nothing special but I can usually sell them for $2 at garage sales to people who want them for their grand kids.
