Hi,

I'm looking through the limited number of nickles that I have and am wondering if anyone could tell me of the more important dates and varieties?
I have attached pictures of a 1943 nickle just because it looks to be the best of the bunch, at least as far as wear goes.

Thanks,
Glen

1948 is always a nice find since it's a low mintage, the Tombacs (like the one above) are also a nice find since they don't circulate (for obvious reasons). I don't have the rest of my info with me here at work, but one of the other Canadian guys (Kurt or chrycopaul are both very knowledgeable) will be by to fill in the blanks.

Oh yeah, 1970 was a fairly low mintage year, and isn't very easily found in circulation, but they're out there.

1951 is of interest. It's the first year Canada issued a non silver dollar commemorative coin, the reverse depicts a nickel mine instead of the beaver. Before the end of the year there was also a steel beaver nickel produced (because nickel was needed for war again) and there were 2 different dies used on this coin but I can't remember what the differences were.

1967 is another commemortive coin for our centennial, features a hare on the reverse.

Yes, especially the 1951 "high relief" with the beaver reverse! That one is quite a rarity with a lot of collector interest.
I admit I'm not as well-versed on the 5c varieties, but I have also looked for the 1953 "mule" coins. I think somewhere here there's a writeup on the differences. If not, Charest's book is a very good guide on all those varieties.

So, off the top of my head, the interesting years are '25, 26 (far 6 especially!), 38, 47 (dot), 48 (thanks Topher I've overlooked that one), 51 HR, 53 NSF "near" reverse, 53 SF "far" reverse, 64 extra water line, 65 large beads, '77 low 7, '96 far 6.

Don't forget the 2000P. They're not overly rare, but they aren't that common either, and they were a fairly low mintage as well.
