I snagged this at my local coin store for $1. Yeah, there's crud on it, so how could, or should, I carefully clean it? Give a detailed explanation if you can.

similar "crud" on some of mine.......and I'm deciding NOT to clean anything....
If it's a "corrisive" crud.....DON'T LET IT COME INTO PROXIMITY OF YOUR OTHER COINS ! IT'S A BLACK DEATH TO OTHER COINS AND CAN SPREAD LIKE THE PLAGUE FOR THE WHOLE BATCH.... IN TIME !

eaglefoot is right, PVC and other types of corrosion on coins will spread from coin to coin, so keep it well away. Acetone should remove the crud from the coin nicely without damaging it. It may leave a purple residue on the copper, but that's better than it being caked in corrosive red crud.

This is an unusual color for an IHC. I think it's environmental corrosion, and I doubt that red color can be removed.

Guess I should have said, I think the red is fine, it's the black gunk I was going to get rid of.

You could try soaking it in olive oil for a few days and then gently try to remove the gunk with a q-tip. Some people use acetone to clean copper.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it looks like red spray paint to me... I can't tell you how to take it off, well I can, but I have no idea how the coin would react.

I can tell you with all honesty, it's not spray paint? I wouldn't waste the groups, nor especially the experts who I hope will chime in's, time. ;)

Spray paint? LOL...I doubt it too, but acetone might take care of that! I think I've seen copper/bronze colorize like that in wet+acidic conditions. Anyway...just a guess, and have fun trying stuff on that coin. Since it's not a rare date, I wouldn't worry about some experimentation.

With a common date such as this, I'd experiment with different ways of cleaning as suggested. Heck, for a buck, why not? Then post your results. I would like to see what acetone does to clean this coin.
