I have been trying to ID an 1866 Shield nickel
and saw that there is a variety with a center dot
on the obv and rev but I haven't been able to find a pix
of one to compare with mine.
Can someone post a pix of one so I can compaire it to mine?
THANKS

It looks like they mean "on both sides" is (SE and SW) of the reverse

Actually, I dont know what they mean...my early morning eyes dont see any difference between the 66 and 67 when I look at them both.

Shield nickel Design Hubs - Reverse Hubs

Reverse hubs are differentiated by checking the relative positions of the stars to the lettering. In the case of reverse hubs Ip and I, the rays between the stars are immediately recognizable.

Try this: http://www.shieldnickels.net/hubs/reverseHubs.html

Reverse Hub Ip
Used only for 1866 Proofs. Stars point to midpoint of A (STATES), to the space between AM (AMERICA), and to the left foot of R (AMERICA). The center dot is also diagnostic for this hub.

I agree with j h s. I also think some pattern Shield nickels also had a dot on them (thought I'm not sure). Anyways, I just want to say that for some reason when I'm offline for more than three days, there's always a Shield nickel question!

Actually the 1866 proofs were made using two pattern dies each of which has a center dot. None of the business strike production dies has a center dot.
