after checking silver halves out on the bay. I have funnie thoughts running through my head. I see all grades of halves going from $7 to $700 for the coins. I realize that the better the grade the more the dollars. But when you are silver hunting this just boggles my mind for some reason. And if you want to hunt one can find better grades for the same money and chime in...
What would the price of silver content be in halves ?
Come one come all

I moved your thread to the Precious Metals section. According to the CCF Coin Facts, a 1964 and prior US Half Dollar (Kennedy and Franklin) have 11.25 grams ASW.

I do not really understand the grams and how they relate to ounces, maybe someone else can explain it better and help me understand. I relate to ounces and fractions (I guess this makes me weird). I hope I can explain this so you can understand.

There are two types of silver US half dollars. Most are 90% silver, some are 40% silver.

The 90% silver halves have slightly more than 1/3 of an ounce of silver in them. With prices hovering around $20/ounce then this will be about $7 of silver in each coin.

The 40% silver halves have slightly more than 1/8 of an ounce of silver in them. Again with the $20/ounce price this comes to about $3 of silver value.

These are crude estimates done on the fly, but this should give you a ballpark estimate on melt (or silver content) value. There are several web sites that have tables showing the amount of silver in coins, just do a search. Hope this helps.
