Picked up this denarius for what I think is a decent price because it has some potential and ticked most of my boxes (If Authentic?). It was the style of Nerva's portrait that I really liked. In hand, the coin was nice but there were a few scratches from the previous owner (the seller said this is ex gitbud and naumann?) and extra metal/dirt all over, as seen in ebay photos.

So I decided to give it a quick cleaning to remove some of the stuff and give it a little bit of toning in areas with scratches to make it a better fit for my collection. Here are the results...

Let me know what you think!! Should I clean it more around the lettering?

Sorry in advance about the photos and the lighting *Taken with my phone*

(the toning is not that dark)

While I'm not an expert on Roman coins, I wouldn't clean this further. Looks like a nice coin!

It looks fine as it is. I wouldn't clean it any further.

Thanks everyone, I won't be cleaning this any further!

I usually don't like cleaning Denarii but I couldn't handle the crud. Would you of left it "as is" seen in the ebay photos? or done what I did? I'm just curious

Its hard to appreciate the coin because of my brutal photos. It's much much nicer in hand with a similar toning as the Hadrian denarius I posted recently!

I think you did well to tone it down a bit. The coin had a brightness (maybe even polished) that gave it an unpleasant look.
For a gradual darkening I have found wrapping in newsprint and storing in a warm place is very
effective. It also has the benefit of being slow and allowing periodic inspection to achieve the best results.
Two thousand year old silver should not glow in the dark !

The coin dates from the first months of the reign of Nerva which can be seen (without research) by the unusual style which resembles Domitian. The facial features and nose (in Nerva's case the "schnaze") has traits that are reminiscent of his predessor.
