PCGS runs quarterly "free grade" specials for members of their Collector Club. Through the end of March, they will grade any gold coin (from any country) for free. You do have to pay the return shipping cost and of course it costs to mail the coin in the first place. Since I'm going to send in some coins anyway, I'll include an extra gold coin to take advantage of this offer.

Overall, it's not a bad deal.

Who was it that said, "sometimes you get lucky..."?

I submitted my ICG-slabbed 1838 half eagle to PCGS using their "free" quarterly grading special. The coin was graded at AU-55 and I specified a minimum crossover grade of AU-53. Fortunately for me, PCGS graded it the same as ICG:

PCGS-Collector-Club-Special:--Crossover-Complete!
PCGS-Collector-Club-Special:--Crossover-Complete!
PCGS-Collector-Club-Special:--Crossover-Complete!

Obviously it's still the same coin, but there is little doubt that the potential value jumped significantly by virtue of crossing to PCGS plastic.

For those considering a crossover submission, be aware that even the free coin special isn't free of cost. My declared value for the coin was $1500 which translates to a PCGS return shipping charge of $22.75. My cost to ship it to them was around $15. Still, in this case the investment (gamble!) paid off.

Your declared value might have been appropriate before, but it ain't now.

I'm not a gold collector but from photos, this looks like a solid 55 to me. Great looking coin -- makes me wish I had the money to expand beyond nickels and halves. Guess I am going to need to talk my wife into taking that second job....

Oh, my!

That's a very nice coin regardless of the plastic, Jaobler!
