Well step one since we dont have a coin dealer in Sudbury I brought it to GOLD DIRECT here in sudbury . They are convinced that it's not toning they said coin collector or XRF my best bet. Question : If I remove it from the case into another case is it still a proof set?

Maybe worth your trip to Toronto, or Richmond Hill Canadian Coin and Currency will XRF it for you and if it's a gold planchet you have a really cool coin and very valuable too. The odd looking dollar is the only valuable coin in the set, the rest of the coins are who cares you can get at issue everywhere.

What a twist. I thought for sure it was strange toning. I'm very intrigued. It's for sure worth the trip to a bigger city I'd say. Please do keep us all posted.

Jake222, I wouldn't take any of the coins out of the set and would leave it as it was purchased, until in the company of someone qualified to examine it. Keep the receipt of purchase somewhere safe and take plenty of photos. Than I'd take it to as many coin dealers I could find and get several opinions from the supposed experts. I would be surprised if they all say the same thing. Better still, If you're going to Ottawa, why not take it directly to the mint, and see if you can get a 100% verified answer there? Perhaps if it is something fishy going on at the RCM, you may become a whistle blower. It might be in your interest, especially if yours is the only one known so far. If there are a couple more kicking around that haven't made it into sets yet, yours could be the only one to leave the mint. It's just so hard to imagine what might have caused this. If this is a one of a kind coin, I doubt you will ever make a better investment buying NCLT. I'd seriously take a closer look at all the other coins as well. You never know, It could be silver plated gold. Lol.

The last thing you should do is to take it to the mint, they might take it, especially if it's is on a gold planchet if this is the case I am pretty sure Canadian Coin would offer you a wack of money for it. More likely it's some kind of trial plating and colouring of this coin and got mixed into the packaging firm

To the forum. I have read this entire thread and I am unable to determine if this is a error, Mint Sport or a simple case of toning, Either way this is an interesting set. There is a new device available now that can test the metal content of a coin without the need to remove it from its case/slab. Many dealers and gold/silver traders now have these devices. Maybe make a few calls to save yourself the leg work and find the dealer/trader that has access to one of these new machines would be a good idea .

The set has really no value, except for this unique looking coin, it's amazing how many pawn or these gold buying shops don't have a 3000.00 hand held unit especially with all the fakes out there.

Since everybody is just spitballing ideas, how about that it was made on a gold planchet, coloured, with added platinum highlights in the sails... Possibly somebody was experimenting at the mint with ideas for the new Maple Leaf 2017 fractional set:

That sounds likes fair bit of work for 1 oz of silver not to mention the whole being illegal part. But just as likely as anyone else's guess. I'm confident in saying, I don't think it left the mint like it is now. There would have to be several people involved and I don't see what would be to gain for those individuals. And quality control might sometimes be lacking but I'm sure anyone would spot this after looking at hundreds of them. This is one interesting coin in deed.
