Can anyone tell me what would cause planchet bubbling to this extent? I have seen cases of this to a much lesser degree on 1980's Lincoln cents and 1997 issues, but nothing like this. The reverse of the coin is just as speckled. Nice that the error is UNC with it orignal color and Mint luster.

NOTE: I just noticed that due to the size of the photo posted here, the bubbling appears very small in size, but I will mention that they are in fact bubbles and not just grainy-looking specks of dust as the photo gives the illusion that they are - nice, round-in-shape bubbles.

I did some research here and have found the answer to my question (zinc issues). Thanks to the knowledgeable regulars here who have shared their insight and wisdom. Still an obscure coin to view, despite the non-rarity of it given the date.

QUESTION: So what makes the 1997 Lincoln cents prone to this process given that this zinc issue cleared up around the minting of the 1990's issues? I have several of these, and some are quite extreme as well. Zinc issues again, as I have no similar problem with my brass 1997 cents?

You are partially correct in saying that the zinc issue cleared up around the 1990s. The first few years of the Zincolns were problematic due to the preparation of the zinc planchets. If they were not completely cleaned before plating, any contaminant on the zinc caused it to corrode underneath the copper plating. The Mint did greatly improve their washing process but every once in a while a dirty batch gets out and you see the "acne" effect. Yours is exceptionally bad though and a wonderful(awful?) example of this phenomenon. I have even seen a couple from the past few years with this problem but for the most part now, they are of much better quality.

As Ed McMahon would say, you are correct, sir - "wonderfully awful" is a most accurate description of my example!
