A little insight if you please. This coin is straight out of a 1965 SMS set that I purchased a few years back. I was so busy trying to capture the cameo characteristic of the coin for photos that I overlooked a very major error - the reverse of the coin was Struck Through Grease and the "H" and "F" in "HALF DOLLAR" are missing on the reverse of the coin. I know that 1965 SMS Kennedy half dollars that exhibit cameo characteristics are rare, but to have one with missing letters as well was a most pleasing find.

How does one even begin to assess a value for an error of this type (missing letters), for this type of coin ( Kennedy half errors are unusual), with a cameo quality on top of that (rare for the date)?

Anyone collecting cameo SMS coins would probably not be interested in it since the clogged dies produced an "imperfect" coin and if you collect those rarebird SMS cameos, you want the best coin possible. A missing letter or two doesn't usually have much of a premium unless the majority of the details are obscured, then it might attract the interest of error collectors. Now you might be able to find a guy named "Al" who collects coins and he might be interested in having his own dollar

It is an interesting oddity though and I would certainly keep it in my collection, I just wouldn't pay anything over normal value for it.

My apologies for calling the "strike through grease" an error, as I now understand that it is just an occurrence of the process. I also have learned that when it comes to premium quality coins or quality-in-appearance coins, "errors" are more often than not detractions; whereas oftentimes they are attractions for lower grade or run of the mill coins - the latter adds to the novelty or uniqueness; the former takes away.

Funny that you should mention "a guy named AL", as with the right marketing ploy, I could market this as the AL GORE 'LET'S PRESERVE AMERICA HALF DOLLAR!' By shortening the lettering on "HALF DOLLARS" to "AL DOLLARS", we could use that extra metal to make more half dollars for circulation and give those to the taxpayers as additional tax credit refunds to help stimulate the economy........

Kind of scary that I am sure that there is a politician out there right now that might think that was a good idea.......
