I found this Elmira Ontario bread token but cannot find any information on it or the C. Schwindt Bakery. Anyone know this one, dates, mintage size, value. Any info on the bakery? Anything is greatly appreciated. It is the size of a quarter and very light weight. Thank You!

That is the first token I have seen for a loaf of bread.

Assuming you couldn't find anything on the interweb I would suggest you try the Elmira Historical Society -- if there is one. Or the Elmira library might have some information.

Bread and milk tokens were given out as either a bonus or change if they were worth more for the bread than the amount of change. The idea was if you came back for your loaf of bread you might buy something else too. As for info on the baker you would have to comb through the business directories/phone books of the city. It is aluminum and as to mintage's that will probably impossible to find most smaller shops only had the minimum amount made up. These were disposable advertising pieces. I have a number of them and the ones for milk in my collection. Most were picked out of either the junk bins or the .50 or half off bins.

Thanks Buddy, I have tried the Elmira Library, The Woolwich Historical Society, The Kitchener Waterloo Historical Society, and four five members of each society with very little results. Same with google searches. I will ask the members of The Waterloo Coin Society at the next meeting. Thanks for the suggestions though!

Thank you Circus and cdngmt. Business records list an Andrew Schwindt as a baker in Elmira in 1913 and might have been involved with Charkes Hoffer as a baker somewhere between 1913 to 1922 so your suggestion of searching business records has given me possible dates for the tokens. cdngmt one of the tokens in the list you provided is from Elora, Ontario very close by and I found some Schwindt"s that did move there. These tokens in EF condition are a retail trend of $75. Would love it if mine were worth that much. Maybe because we can't find too much on C. Schwindt Baker they are very rare and worth a fortune. Anyone want one to help out with my retirement fund, just email me!
