Hey all after counting up my change jar I came across two twenty pence coins with casting errors on them, the first has some slag that covers the T giving me a wenty pence. The second has the top lettering faded and missing. I think it has not been struck hard enough.

Could anyone tell me if I am correct and if they are worth keeping a hold of?

Thanks

Lewis_York, welcome to the forum.

As much as I can tell your first 20p has a " Cud" on where it has to sat "Twenty Pence". It looks like a large Cud indeed, usually a lot larger than 20p's I come across in circulation. A " Cud" happens when a piece of the original die which strikes the motif of the con to the planchet falls off or gets obscured due to (usually) heavy use.

Second picture looks like a weak strike on the motto that surrounds the coin. I sometimes see weak strikes on 20p's but that seems to be a fair enough one.

I dare to say I see more errors like those in post-2008 British coinage with every passing year. Small Cuds are becoming more and more common especially on 20p coins I can say from observing circulating coins.

If you are interested in such minor mintage errors, they may be your cup of tea. How much they worth are something I cannot tell, but an interested collector can give up to 2 pounds or similar to the one with the large Cud and maybe around 1 pound to the one with weak strike. Again, I cannot say that I have experence in putting a value on coins so please take a second opinion on that.

Hi Lewis There isn't any real interest in the UK market for these unlike the US market for their coins. ebay might make a couple of £. IMO not worth the bother.I think the UK has bigger fish to fry without bothering with decimals and Cuds.

Thanks for the info, shame they are not worth much but I guess a wenty pence is a conversation starter at least.
