Considering trading $220 worth of junk silver for this toned Morgan (the reason for its premium). Is it worth that much and do you agree with the grade given by NGC?

While the toning is nice IMO the price is too high. I would pass on this one due to this.

Thanks for your opinion Mont. What would be a reasonable price you think?

I think it could be worth the money from a toner market perspective. Personally, I would cross this to PCGS and opt to pay for the tru view service to get some really stunning photos. I think with this in mind, the price wouldn't be the issue.

Quote: What would be a reasonable price you think? Hard to say. There are a lot of people out there who collect toners like these and are willing to pay a nice premium for them. I've seen some on ebay go for outrageous prices. Try doing a search on ebay for toned 1884O Morgan dollars NGC MS64 and see what they sold for. While I like beautifully toned Morgan dollars, I would never pay twice coin value(or more) for one just for the toning. But that is just me. Now if it was one of the better VAMs for the year then it would be different. AS for agreeing with the grade given by NGC, I cant say with these pictures. Too much glare on slab. Try retaking pictures close-up then trimming picture to just coin for grading.

Sounds like a lot of dough to me, but the coin certainly is a knockout and I'd love to see better pics.

If you fall in love with a coin it is likely that you will always love it. If you have good taste in coins, as this example suggests, you will not be the only one to love that coin. Which means it will draw more attention if\when you decided to sell it.
I'd be a buyer at $160 if the tone is well represented by these photos.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I'll see if I can talk him down to 160-200$. He wanted junk silver so maybe I can work something out. It is a gorgeous coin

I think the obverse color is definitely premium toning and 2x MS64 FMV is reasonable.

It's nice toning. Do I think it's 100% markup nice? Not as much. I find the coin very attractive, personally; if you don't mind the price you'll probably be happy with the eye appeal.
That being said, if that's not your hand in the pics, I would insist on seeing the coin in-person, toning is difficult to capture accurately in photographs.

Putting a premium on for toning is what ever a buyer is willing to pay. Will you get your money back in the future, maybe, maybe not. Charging extra for a tarnished coin was a dealer gimmick a couple decades ago.
