Today I received this 1857 Flying Eagle cent. I purchased it because it had a broken wingtip which is a diagnostic mark of some DDO types.

I've taken a number of photos (sorry that they are not nearly as clear on the legends as I would like).

The coin does have the broken wingtip.

The eagle's eye appears to be doubled.

There is doubling to the left side of the CA in AMERICA.

There is doubling to the right side of the TED in UNITED.

There also appears to be doubling to the right side and above on the ATES in STATES.

I tried to take close up shots of the doubling in the legends but my camera is not the best. The obverse shot of the coin probably shows it best.

I don't know if the doubling in the legends is Longacre Doubling or the diagnostics for a known DDO. I've checked online Snow reference sites, but can't be sure if the coin matches any of the known DDOs.

I'd appreciate thoughts on whether it is a DDO or just a coin with a broken wingtip and Longacre Doubling.

Thanks in advance.

Pictures are a bit fuzzy, but looks like a Snow-3.

I agree that this does appear to be an S-3, but better pictures would definitely help. Some of the markers include thinner denticles on lower half of coin. I can see that. All letters in legend should be doubled as well as eye, beak, and tail feathers. Also, look for die file mark through 2nd T in STATES, above OF and off right edge of M. With coin in hand maybe you can see the markers. Hope this helps. Scarce variety.

Some of these markers may be difficult to see due to wear on your coin.

Thank you for the responses so far.

I took some more photos in sunlight and they do show things better. You can see a lot more of the doubling in the legends.

I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for in the "file mark" through the letters on the obverse. I'll check some online examples for that.

Thanks for your responses.

I'm glad I spotted the broken wing tip and took a chance on this Flying Eagle. I'll attribute it as Snow 3.
