This quarter is straight out of the mint set cello. Can someone tell me what has happened? The damage on the reverse is directly opposite of the damage on the obverse. There are no other irregular marks on the coin other than as pictured.

Please keep in mind that the packaging does not protect a coin. Anyone could damage a coin while it is inside the package. It is difficult to say what happened to this coin but it is damage.

Thank you two for your input. I did not know if this was something that may have happened during the minting process. The mint cello was unmolested and still sealed. What I thought obscure were the gear-looking abrasions on the rim of the reverse of the quarter - however they are not in rhythm with the reeding of the edge of the coin. It looks like it went through a gear wheel on on side and as it went through it put the slices in the obverse edge as though the gear drug it across a sharp edge. Do they allow can openers at the US Mint - as that is what it kind of looks like?! HA! No matter, it was something that was beyond me. Had I found it in a bank roll or in change, I would not have even posted this or given it a second thought outside of human altering. Thanks again!

Anything inside a "Mint Sealed" package would definitely warrant a question like this. It is a good question. We sometimes even see coins that were damaged packaged in proof sets.

It is possible that it was damaged after the actual minting process but prior to it being packaged.

That would mean it is not an error but a damaged coin that was packaged by a Mint employee and that is not an unheard of scenario:-)

In the package it raises interesting questions.

Thanks,
Bill
