This very unfortunate spot mars an otherwise MS penny. Can any of the forum experts tell me what caused this spot, is it safe to soak in water for a few hrs to see if the water dissolves it, and what effect on grade this spots causes? Any input is appreciated. Regards, Bill

Could be many things - a water spot, perhaps, or an area where a foreign substance adhered for a time.

Still a Mint state coin, just not a higher grade one because of the spot. Some mineral oil might do the job

That stain is down into the metal, any attempt to remove it will be futile.

It looks like the start of a carbon spot.
