I saw this at a yardsale today, and I thought it was intriguing, so I bought it.

I know it's fake, but I looked it up online, and I found one picture I think was the original.

It looked exactly like this, except it was a different color, there was a colon after 'BRITT' instead of a period, the reverse said 'CORONATION 1953' and on mine the word 'CORONATION' is spelled wrong. Instead it reads 'CORONTION'.

What I'm interested to find out is if it is a replica made sometime around the actual coronation, or if it's modern, and what exactly is the purpose?

I has a chain attached to a ring at the top, but the chain is attached by one ring and not the entire chain through the ring.

It doesn't appear to be able to function as a necklace or bracelet, but maybe like some kind of charm or keepsake? Or possible a party favor?

I've never heard of replicas of this type of coin, especially one that is intended for some type of jewelry purpose and having this kind of detail (usually the British replicas I've seen on jewelry are horriblly forged and have almost no resemblence to the genuine article) so any information would be helpful.

It's unknown to me, too.

Any idea on what it's made of? Is it magnetic? Can the chain be removed so you can get a weight measurement? Is there a hallmark?

Both the chain and the coin are a lightweight, cheap plastic. It's literally like something you would buy at a dollar store.

That's why I thought that it might have been a party favor, but I can't find any other examples, or even listings for party favors to buy.

It could very well be something you would find at a dollar store type place in the UK. That would explain why there's nothing about it online.

However, it's oddly specific. I can understand having play money of modern British currency, but why a coronation coin from 1953?

That in itself is why I thought it might have been older, otherwise it's a little weird to manufacture a toy replica of a 63 year old coin out of nowhere.
