Wow. Been weeding out my coins for the last 8 weeks, one quart sized bag per day.I still have around three more hours till I'm done. Set 800+ cents free. Did find a few I over looked the first time around. One was a capped die I had labeled as a Greaser. Four LWC's that are DDR's and a few other things. I did total up my WAM's: 98=10 99=1 2000=15.
Tip to you newbies, don't put off organizing your finds.

You are right...don't put it off. I don't collect (or look for) varieties / errors etc. but I do need to organize my collection.

LOL - I would take pictures of my desk to illustrate your point John but I'm too embarrassed!

I haven't CR hunted in a few months due to the 2016 project I have going. I'm through about half of my nickel hoard with another few weeks/months of picking away at the pile to go.

Good advice: keep up with the hoard else you get trampled!

I'm working on getting my collection (hoard?) better organized. I've got all the wheat cents gathered into one cigar box, the Canadians in another, and the old Jeffersons/others in yet another. The silver was all rolled up a long time ago and resides in the safe.

For my fairly large hoard of Wheat pennies I bought a couple boxes of those square plastic tubes. Each tube is marked for a year/mint mark. I have one tube for each year/mintmark from 1940 to 1982.

When the tube gets filled I remove the pennies into paper wrappers for storage. I cull out the best condition coins and use them for the books or put them in 2x2's.

Pennies from the 30's or before get booked or 2x2's.

As I collect Canadian coins as well I have a separate box for Canadian cents, but have one for each year from 1960 through the end, with separate tubes for different compositions. All the ones prior to 1960 get 2x2's since I have a lot less.

I have a similar set up for US nickels (of which I have many) 1946 through 1960. Prior years get 2x2's.

All my silver gets 2x2's as well as the Ike's and SBA's. Canadian coins above the cent get tubed by denomination except for those I choose to put in 2x2's.

My 2x2's are mostly in 3-ring binder holders broken out by nation, with the US and Canada each having a couple books further separated by denomination.

I like to use holidays to organize my coins. I got a TON done on Labor Day! Culled out a lot of EF/AU clad & nickel coins that really weren't worth saving because of the date and mintmark... they're now back in circulation, and I have more CRH cash! Being organized is always a good thing!
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I like this thread John1. It is important to keep re-evaluating the collection as we learn more. Nice rediscovery of the capped die struck coin!

rackster, maybe show us the pic? Its just the internet hahah :-)

n9jig, I like the setup you have with the tubes and then into paper rolls. I do that with nickels. I do it with my cents too, but only by teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s. As you can imagine, I have lots of rolls for 40s and 50. But there are rolls for the rarer early dates too.

I cleaned out recently and I dumped most my NIFC halves, and some bad looking proof halves too. I couldnt part with the 1987s, so I made a few rolls of those and held on to them.

My other hobby is unbending paperclips, I do tens of thousands a week. (if anyone can name the 1970s animated film this is a reference to, kudos to you. I dont really unbend paperclips.)
Rest in Peace

I have a bag of Wheats that compile about two years of roll hunting. I started rolling and marking dates and count last weekend. Hoping to finish today and move on to the bag of Canadians.

Sad that it's taken this long to finally organize myself.

How I do things, at least with pennies is I take any pennies from customer wrapped rolls, I search through them, then the ones for circulation go in my replacement bucket (for when I do machine wrapped boxes) I keep the pre crimped rolls and throw out the rest. Then I mark the rolls with dates and mint marks.
