Hi all got these from an auction yesterday. Not a terrible auction although Morgan dollars were super high prices (people paying around $100 when online they go for $40-50). Anyways what do you think about these two pickups? An 1800 large cent and an 1807 Draped bust half dollar! Thoughts on grade and if these would be considered appealing lowball coins? Thanks!

Very cool finds! I think the large cent could get pretty close to the P1 as the reverse is entirely gone. I really like the half dollar, but could see it getting an FR2 with the remaining lettering and eagle/sheild on the reverse!

They both look like unappealing slugs to me. I don't understand why these would be considered "cool" coins? What kind of pride would someone have in showing these to others?

The appeal of the lowballs for many is the mystique of the stories they tell, the pockets they traveled in, the local economies they supported. That they still exist, even on their last breath of detail gives these coins tremendous character. Compared to a lot of high end coins that have done little more than sit in a handful of collections, these lowballs have an appealing charm.

To each his own in the Coin World! I don't like low ball coins, but I would not spend big money on common coins in MS66 condition either. With many of the coins I like just being able to read the date is the sign of a good coin. A strong date on a pre-1925 LSQ is a big deal to me.

I do understand that there is a collector's base for the lowballs, some may like the history part of it but I do believe there are those that have the mindset of "I have the most worn, yet discernable, coin out there" too. Like saying you have the best graded, some I am sure are proud having one that could be the best "low" graded. And for me personally I would not collect coins this worn, this was from an auction and I like getting some deals I think I can re-sell. The half dollar may not get me much profit but I that one was also a little bit "I really want to own (even for a little bit) a half dollar that old." :)

I would really love to own a Flowing Hair or Draped Bust coin from 18th Century, but I want one to be in as good a condition as I can afford. I am still improving sets I finished years ago. My LSQ set could stand a lot of work given that most of the coins can be had for $100 or less. Just like I want a some gold coins, but am hoping prices of gold drop a bit.

You might want to add these to this Lowball thread. https://goccf.com/t/245011 I think they'll get more appreciation!
