All commemorative newer toonies have a design that extends to the outer ring. Also, the proofs are solid metal not in fact bimetallic. The centre is plated as well don't have security features. If it was a specimen, they as well lack the security features. this outer ring is absoltley a 2017 common twoonie ring, and from everything shown - it is certainly 1 whole common 2017 toonie.
Has anyone tried to pop the centre on a new design toonie, out of curiosity? They look more fused together than the old ones from what I see

My understanding is all toonies since 96 is a two piece planchet with a patent on the core lock, if one knows the secret to pop the earlier ones the recent toonies should be the same design

@ Alan. Can't answer to popping out the centre of a toonie but the various RCM "personal special event" gift sets - wedding, birthday, baby - all contain circulation coin and as I recall are available at the beginning of each year. Will they also contain 150th anniversary designs or just the regular 2017 type issues? Don't know but after Koolkat tours the mint, perhaps he can also inform us of RCMs plans.

I'm sure there will be regular issue toonies in some set or other. The mint can't pass up the opportunity to make a buck. Or two.

If you do tour the mint, make sure you don't take the coin with you, might not leave with it, my guess they would not answer any of your questions but a cool place to see the press minting our coins.

I don't want to say weather or not to take it. I'd hate to say to take it and something bad happens. But you've got to think theyed be as interested as anyone to see it. I'm sure people have showed mint staff errors, and they probably say "how'd that get out?" and laugh
I agree, makes sense They may put out a gift set with the normal toons yes, maybe start rolling them out in 2 months, birth sets etc, whatever it's been in previous years. likely not contaim the new 150th set, they'll want to have a big release for that, in 2017 and a whole marketing event etc. but who know beyond speculation I guess

It's safe to say this coin should not be released yet, and to flash it in front of their face is foolish when a photo will do. The RCM is never very helpful in the most mundane questions regarding simple previous mintages and especially questions like how this coin got out, play it safe talk in third party even.

You bet. Not only that, I do not want to draw any unnecessary attention to myself, no pictures, just a few pointed questions, maybe a third party scenario, of a hypothetical find of some Coins getting out early etc. Also I will defiantly ask the questions posted here! I plan on going tomorrow, perhaps. Great input, thanks you all.

Rather than take the physical item, take the pictures. Seems simple.

I am interested in how there could be a 2017 coin floating about before it's even 2017? That said, how far in advance does the RCM start the minting process for the next years coins?

on wildflower comment on the mismatch 2016 sets I got mine from a local small town post office and she didn't know about this until I ask to see what sets she had in a order that came in I didn't have the chance to check the others because she had them set aside for some of her regular customers. So I believe mine are for real.

I think "wildflower" and "john100" said it best. Research it and don't spend the 50 bucks. As someone once said "patience ma boy, patience".

This coin is clearly from the future. A time traveler left this in Winnipeg just to mess us up. I'd get it slabbed since the grader said they would remark on its oddity. The Time Traveler Toonie. $$$$
