The color scares me a tad bit. Have you check the weight of this coin? I assume this coin was purchased raw so I hope it was from a very reputable dealer? So what can you tell us about it CCya?

I love the coin! AU50? As with most old silver cleaning may be an issue. Mike

I'm with Terry: given the number of fake Bust Dollars kicking around the market, I'd look at it with a critical eye. Where did it come from and, if it's raw, how has it excaped slabbing? With the potential value of this coin, a reputable dealer or collector will have authenticated it.

A little more info on the coin. It is not mine and is in a PCGS VF 35 slab. My thoughts are cleaned and retoned at one time. As for the "blue suede shoe color" I think the auction house placed a colored light bulb on this coin to enhance the color and therefore enhance the selling price.[:p] IMHO

Not having much experience with grading Bust dollars, but it does seem to have a bit more meat on it for a VF 35. I agree with you Rick.

PCGS applies different standards for different coins, particularly the rarer and older ones (ownership of the coin notwithstanding). A light cleaning two centuries ago can be ignored while the same degree of cleaning on one of my Morgans which is "only" 125 years old will cause it to be bodybagged. If the 1799 Bust $ was, in fact cleaned, the VF-35 may be an unstated Net grade. I wonder what they would do if someone submitted a 6th 1913 Shield nickel which had been cleaned?

Well it is good to hear the coin has been authenticated and graded by a reputable service. That would make me breath a lot easier concerning this type of coin. Hope you got a great buy as the old dollars are really put a hurt on the wallet these days.

Beautiful coin!! I agree with PCGS VF35 grade. There is too much wear on the finer details for an EF grade (in my opinion).
