Newbie here. I have been meaning to join for several months and have lots of questions and photos, but this one today just about gave me a heart attack. Photos attached and please let me know your opinions. It appears to me that the dot is indented rather than raised, but it is in the right position. Coin obtained in grab bag at auction. If worth pursuing, who should I contact?

Looks like a poor man's 1936. Or in other words pms (post mint shenanigans). Experts will be along shortly, but from my understanding the dot needs to be raised for it to be a dot penny

That looks more like the right offset inverted dot cent to me...

Probably not quite as rare as the 36 dot cent...

Bad joke Wildhare..........Nothing there in that cent of yours..

....but please do add more photos and questions...

I'd have to agree with everyone else, post mint shenanigans, I'm sure someone put it there on purpose to fill a slot in there book or something.

Many old timers believe the famous dot cents were custom made for one collector who had a very close relationship with the mint master, doubt there's any wild pieces.

It's not in the right position.

No heart attack warranted on this one.

Go ahead and spend it.

There are dots all over the place. I found this one this morning. Looks like PMD. I will put it into the empty hole in the folder just cause...

Now that dot is a nicer fit...but let's also see the flip side of that cent and "maybe" we will see how the dot was added..

As previously stated..a raw 36 dot probably never escaped..

As Devlec said, the "dot" is in the wrong place, but many have been altered once the story came out about the rarity 40-50 years ago and was published. Maybe those other "dots" the guy was practicing, but yours doesn't loof round enough. I'd keep it in the hole it osccupies, cause it's a nice story.

On too many occasions as a young collector over 50 years ago,..I was sure that I had found another 36 dot cent..

Got my heart in a dither too many times...but I still do look....

..but okiecoiner has finally turned my head to searching out the vicky varieties instead..

Now those are the ones that are still out there....
