Hello again, Today I looked through a few coins I had locked away. This 1853 Quarter has an imperfection under the date. It definitely looks cleaned. What is that below the date? It also looks to have some gouges. Please give me your opinions on this quarter. Thanks very much. dcas55

It is a large obverse retained rim Cud. Yup, she's been cleaned, but that's still pretty uncommon to see such a large Cud on a Lib Seated quarter, at least from my limited knowledge.

Does not look retained. It is a Cud. A nice one. Shall I email JC or should the OP

Nice Cud, makes an otherwise common condition coin quite interesting.

The coin does not look cleaned to me, maybe finger rubbed but other than that the color looks original and dark areas around all the raised devices do not indicate it was cleaned. Nice rim Cud.

I'm VF details on this one and in the club that it was cleaned. I dont think it was chemically cleaned though. as IndianGoldEagle suggested there dark areas around the raised devices would indicate that it was not cleaned, however, the coin appears to have been cleaned with maybe a cloth to attempt to remove crud on the coin to the point that it was overly done.

Agree the reverse looks original; perhaps the obverse fields were slightly cleaned long ago. Certainly seems market-acceptable in these pics.
