From Ray's initial instructions to me:

Quote:
Put Cent in middle of stage and hit Live View button in EOS Utility control panel. // At this point, you should be able to see the Cent on your monitor. I left all camera settings exactly as they were for the shots I took. I also left the bellows in the same settings, so the Cent should be in good focus and magnification. Move the coin to center and level, and hit the magnifier button on the EOS Utility control panel. This will give you a full-resolution view of the area contained by the white box in the full-coin view. You can then adjust the bellows if needed for focus.

If you recall, what are those camera and bellows settings? (I should have written them down, but alas, I did not.)

Thanks!

Mark

P.P.S. Here are your (Ray's) complete instructions if needed to refresh your memory of the system I purchased and such.

Quote:
Cut box open carefully
Remove contents of inner box carefully...the Director is inside and it is a bit delicate
Screw the macro stand to the bellows...it can only go on one way
Install the stage plate to macro stand
Remove Canon lens cap from adapter/mount (leave thumbscrew in place on cap for now)
Remove Canon camera cap from camera
Install adapter/mount to camera
Place camera/adapter/mount onto bellows
Set Director flat on table, cone facing up
Remove lens front cap
Press-fit lens onto cone...carefully, making sure it is pushed-on evenly
Remove lens rear cap
Screw lens onto bellows...it will "click" maybe 10 times as you tighten it
Remove thumbscrew from Canon lens cap
Thread thumbscrew into side of bellows camera standard and tighten lightly...holds mount in place
Build the lights, plug in, and set them up to point at the Director 1" above and around 10:00 and 2:00
Install CDR into PC/laptop
Install EOS Utility and Digital Photo Professional...other software is optional
Install USB cable to camera and to computer
Turn on camera...software should start automatically...if not, start EOS Utility
Put Cent in middle of stage and hit Live View button in EOS Utility control panel

At this point, you should be able to see the Cent on your monitor.

The above instructions will get you going once you get the package.

Hi Mark,

The camera settings are:

Top knob on Av (aperture priority)
ISO 100
White balance Tungsten (light bulb)
Size L (large jpg)
EV -1/3
Picture Style Standard
Picture Style sub-settings 1,-1,0,0 (sharpness 1, contrast -1, saturation 0, hue 0)

All of the above (except the top knob Av) can be set in the EOS Utility

For the bellows, you will need to learn how to set things up from scratch. Best way is as follows:

Set the microscope stand, bellows rail, camera mount, and lens mount all as high as they will go.
Set lens aperture to f8
Turn on Live View
Put a coin on the stage. It will probably be fuzzy
Slowly adjust the lens rail a little lower until the coin comes into focus

This is your starting point. From there, you need to learn how to make adjustments, and it will be a lot of trial and error, but you can always come back to this point. To get higher magnification, move the lens and camera rails farther apart (more extension). Move the bellows rail or the copy stand lower to get focus back. Keep iterating until you have nearly filled the frame with the coin, and it is in focus.

Awesome! Thanks so much Ray.

One of those mischievous North Carolina mountain elves must have snuck in and changed my settings! Those little rascals.

Actually, when I am not entertaining elven delusions, I managed to get most of the settings correct--just need to fix a couple of them. :O)
