Hi everyone, I just picked up this very interesting Indo-Sasanian piece or possibly later medieval piece from the Gujarat region. It applears a bit like early Gadhaiya Paisa. However, I am not seeing any kind of match on the few sites on the subject. Any help IDing the general date and location of circulation would be of great help!

It's a drachm of the Pratihara-Pala Supremacy, 780 - 980 AD.

Bob L- Great! Thanks for the help! Out of curiosity, are these farily scarce? It seems like rarely does one see many drachms of this ilk on online auction sites.

I agree they don't seem to show up often. Ancientnoob could probably provide info about exactly how rare these are. He's the go-to guy for these more esoteric Eastern ancients.

You're not going to find much info on them. I am actually including these in a study as a subset of my "big secret" project which I hope to wrap up when the last coins arrive in mid or late October, so stay tuned

For the sake of the here and now, I would consider these to be a product of the earlier Gurjara-Pratihara, and of an entirely different evolutionary tree than the Gadhaiya Paisa. My hypothesis is that these are a *direct* descendant of Sassanian coins, rather than the Hunnic copies.

Was this perchance an ebay purchase that just arrived yesterday? I just got mine in the mail, too!

Here is a Zeno.ru page with some examples similar to yours, attributed to the Gurjara dynasty in the Jodhpur region.

It's probably from about 550-700 AD.

Found a little more info.... maybe.

Haven't been able to pin anything specific to these coins, but I was able to find a few printed references (no pictures) indicating that the pala dynasty started minting coins of Sassanian style bearing the legend "Sri Vigra" for the ruler Vighrapala I. Ancient sources call these coins Vighrapala-Dramma, but Google searches usually turn up much later coins. I am pretty sure yours bears a legend to the right of the face, but I'm not qualified to read it.
