I have been debating rather to buy complete sets or the pennies from these sets, but there seems to be a pricing issue. The 1935-2010 Proof Special Edition Set has sold for as low as $125 US Funds on ebay, but the dealers are asking $85 for the penny from that set. The 1911-2011 set with the Large Cent is going for as low as $200 for the set, but the dealers want $99 for the penny alone. I cannot imagine the penny would have a value almost equal to half the value of the entire set, so what price should I be looking to pay for these coins? Problem is that there are not very many being offered for just the penny, while the entire sets are more commonly offered. I just want the pennies, but have been thinking about buying the entire sets and breaking them up to get the pennies and sell the rest. Are the pennies really that valuable from these sets? Other coins from the sets are selling for half as much or less. Should I just buy the set and break them up? Need some advice here.

It is the demand that dictates the prices... something we cannot control. I guess it depends how patient you are to get those specific coins....

Interesting dilemma faced by anyone collecting a particular denomination in proof or even specimen finishes.

As a whole the sets are expensive enough on their own but given time you may find some being offered for less than half issue price. In some cases the individual coins will drop in price proportionately as well depending on the demand.

If you decide to break up the set for the sake of one coin, you have to find collectors willing to pay a hefty premium for the remaining pieces in order to get back your investment. Depending on your situation this may not be worth the trouble or aggravation.

One example related to your predicament is the 2006 proof gold plated dollar which typically retails for more than the cost of the entire set.
