Hi I have a couple of coins & they are in PCGS standard slabs. I don't know how to determine if they are legit and would like to PM with someone about them instead of posting so the info is private.
Thanks

Easy as pie. Tell us, what makes the slabs appear suspect to you?

Thank you. Yes, I have already looked up the certs and they match, watched some videos on PCGS and read many post here on CCF but, I have been researching them for a couple of hours now and have some specific questions that I still need help with. Just want to make sure because of the counterfeit slabs. The coins look beautiful and with the information I have found so far to compare them to they are genuine - BUT?
Thanks Again

Well, not suspect, just that I am overly cautious person. I don't have and have never seen in hand a slabbed coin of any kind - So I have Zero knowledge base.
What does Series represent? What does coin # represent?
Can you have the exact slab coin with same series # and coin # but different certification #?

The first 4 numbers is the type of coin, followed by a period, followed by two numbers (which is the grade), followed by a \ followed by the rest of the numbers which are specific only to that coin.

Quote: Can you have the exact slab coin with same series # and coin # but different certification #? Yes, the series # and coin # do not change (for a given date/mm/type of coin) but the certification number always changes from coin to coin. Sounds like you have an older PCGS holder that listed a series # (which they haven't included on slabs for many years). You can PM me pictures if you want more help.

OK thanks. All of that matches to PCGS on both. They don't have a picture of either one though.

If I take pictures and post them - would you all be able to tell from the pictures?
They would be over in the Classic Coin section.

If they are good pics, we will be able to tell if they are real or fake. If you do post, put the link in this thread

Quote: What does Series represent? Internally PCGS gave each series in the US coinage a number. Quote: What does coin # represent? They also gave each coin within each series a number. The Series and coin numbers never really caught on and in Nov of 2005 PCGS stopped putting them on the labels. The first modern fake slabs did not appear until several years later and I have never seen them go back and fake the earlier slabs. Quote: Can you have the exact slab coin with same series # and coin # but different certification #? Yes. Say you had two 1909 S Lincoln cents They are both from the same series so they have the same series number. The coin number was assigned starting with the first issue, in this case 1909, then 1909 VDB, then 1909 s etc. So two 09 S Lincolns would have the same Coin number as well. But each coin they grade receives it's own unique serial/certification number.
