Hi everyone, I have been collecting Morgan's for quite some time, picking some up here and there. I've accumulated alot of the common dates but as I go back and look through my stash, I have quite a few doubles that I would like to trade or sell at an upcoming coin show in my area. I am not a good wheeler/dealer and have not really traded or sold, just accumulated . I would like to trade in for either semi-keys, keys, or carsons which are obviously more expensive. What I would like to sell or trade is: 1886 Morgan PCGS MS62 1879 Morgan PCGS AU58 1880-o Morgan PCGS AU55 (really nice rim toning) 1898 Morgan PCGS AU55 1887-o Morgan PCGS AU58 1896 Morgan PCGS MS61 1921-s Morgan PCGS MS60 1891-s Morgan, cleaned, looks uncirculated 1902 Morgan, looks uncirculated 1902 Morgan, looks unc. but looks cleaned 1880-o Morgan looks XF/AU 1888-o Morgan, looks uncirculated 1882-o Morgan, looks uncirculated, hairlines- could have been cleaned 1891 Morgan, looks au/unc 1921 Morgan, looks Au So, what do you think I should ask for or what I can get for this, now that silver is climbing? I would appreciate any input thanks

I hope you'll understand if we're a little paranoid here about new members suggesting selling/trading coins - there are a whole lot of scam artists out there, and we get our share here. Judging from the wording of your post, I get the impression that you're not that type, and I'll offer the best advice I can regarding the disposition of the coins you've listed. They're not particularly valuable or desirable, as you seem to be aware, so I'm thinking your best bet is to liquidate them on ebay. ebay is also your best bet as a reference to determine what coins like yours are selling for in the real world. That will give you a basis for possible wheeling and dealing at the coin show. At the show, though, you're not going to get retail value for them - the people you're trading with are going to want to make a profit on the deal. That's why I'm suggesting selling them on ebay.

You are correct. I am not out to scam anyone. That was never my intention for the post. I was hoping with the experience of the collectors here on the forum, my main question was if I could get a little better than melt value for these common dates...Again any input is appreciated. In regards to ebay; I've bought off ebay but never sold. I was also hoping just to liquidate it one felt swoop at the coin show that I previously mentioned

You very likely can. Unfortunately, you're not going to get a whole lot for them. Chances are all you'll get offered for the raw coins is melt, even the Uncirculated ones. You'll do a little better with the slabs, but not by a whole lot as they're not high grades or rare dates. Have you researched them for varieties? There are a few dates in your list which have varieties with substantial extra value. It'd be kinda like winning the lottery for odds, but you might as well cover every base.

Dave (as usual is right) you will come out of it a lot better selling them on ebay, especially the slabbed stuff. I am a dealer and you wouldn't even want to hear the offer most of the guys I work with would give. If you are totally against ebay, make sure that you shop them around to every dealer at that show and be sure to get the best offer rather that sell to the first one you talk to. Also look to see how their key date coins are priced. If one dealer has over-priced key dates, he might make an offer that seems better than another dealer for trade, but you will pay the overinflated prices in the trade and come out behind where you would have with another dealer. It can be a tricky business because there are all types involved in it. Just be careful and make sure you are comfortable with everything that you do.

You might want to ask what percentage of "book value" they are willing to pay for that type of coin in general. Then ask what percentage they'll pay if you are trading.

Well I just got back from my coin show in Orlando. I had added 3 more low mint state common date Morgans, from my original post as I was able to upgrade, so I had a total of 18 Morgans, 5 were slabbed, low mint state, ms60-62, 5 were slabbed au 55, and 8 were raw, cleaned, circulated etc that I wanted to sell, trade in etc. One gentleman offerd $390 if I traded, 360 if I wanted cash, but all of his carsons were through the roof. I finally sold to another guy for 375. But I have to say, the key date and carsons were overpriced in my opinion. One gent said of my slabbed coins , that they would be easier to sell if they weren't slabbed. So I am holding on to the cash till the next coin show

I guess you didn't listen to SuperDave. You really should have attempted to sell on ebay. Naturally if your in a hurry, that wouldn't do since it takes time to sell anything on ebay. But remember when you use ebay, your audiance is in the millions and millions and all over the World, not just a few hundred or even a few thousand at a coin show. Then too on ebay YOU are the dealer, not just someone attempting to unload some coins. Coin show dealers are there to make money, not necessarily to give you the best deals when selling.

This kind of stumped me. Why would someone rather sell non-slabbed coins if the coins were already graded and it costs them nothing? Only reason I can think of is to pass off the AUs as MS and the lower MS as higher? Is there something else I'm missing here?

That's your prerogative, of course. They're your coins, to dispose of as you please. For the future, though....the 1888-O Morgan alone accounts for 12 of the Top 100 VAM's. Some of them would be worth the entire price you realized, just for the one coin. The 1921-S has a series of varieties called Thornheads, some of which would be worth in the hundreds of dollars each, if you can find one. ebay is a problem for the buyer, not for the seller. If you show clear pictures of your coins, and discuss their faults honestly, and have a reasonable return policy, it's easy to get good prices for Morgans on ebay. At a rough guess, and considering ebay's fees, you probably only gave up about $5 per coin by selling them at the show. Not counting the potential varieties with additional value.

Start right here, my friend: http://www.vamworld.com/It's a pretty complex world, VAM's. There are something close to 5,000 die pairs identified, and nobody has all of them at their fingertips. You'll find quite a few VAM fanatics here at Coin Community (I'm one of them), and we'll be more than happy to help with figuring out what you're looking at.

I 've experienced the same thing, accumulating morgans via e-bay as a buyer only; will attempt sell on e-bay soon.
