Indeed, a beautiful example. And with impressive provenance. But why in the world would this coin be listed on ebay instead of through a major auction house? I don't get it.

I see it's on acsearch.info...not sure if this link will work: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2406358

No doubt, incredible coin. I am curious as to why it is offered via ebay as the total costs ends up being far more to the seller than even through a major house like CNG or NAC. Furthermore, I tend to see his prices as really high, in some cases a five or ten time markup. A coin is worth what someone is willing to pay, of course. That said, I noticed one Constans, in far less ideal condition than mine, selling for $500 or so and I paid $80 via an auction. When I see a coin for 125,000 via ebay I find that odd. It's like when Costco tries to sell a $500,000 diamond or something.

I agree it's strange to see it on ebay. I wonder what the listing fee is? It might be cheaper to list it there than having to pay an auction house fees. I don't see it selling on ebay, not too many people with $125K to spend hang around there.

It's the ebay equivalent of a 20 foot tall neon billboard sign with a giant arrow pointing at the owner's storefront, the coin shop equivalent of the $125,000 diamond-encrusted, solid-gold Rolex in the local jewellers' window.

It draws attention, gets people to look at their merchandise and discuss the items for sale, and maybe, just maybe, consider actually purchasing the big ticket item, but if not, surely one of the smaller items; aka the Tiffany's model of doing business -- no one should leave without a souvenir of their visit, whether purchased or given.

I suspect the seller is under no illusion that this coin will sell on ebay; it is likely free to relist at any rate.

But it seems to have worked. I went to the listing to check it out. Apparently, you all did as well. And more than likely you might have browsed some of the seller's other listings...

...maybe there's reason to the madness after all? :)

That makes a lot of sense, good business practice.

My first job was at a BJ's--essentially like a Costco. After I had enough tenure (and after I turned 21) I was allowed to take a bunch of cushy shifts in the liquor store, where I didn't have much else to do except look at the single bottle of Remy Martin Louis XIII, priced at the low low cost of $1400.

It sat in its locked display case as little more than a conversation piece, until one day, someone walked right in and bought it.

He probably set the price really high to see if anyone would bite. No one has....yet.

Really is modern...
...and unexpensive.

Yikes, that is a lot for a single coin. Interestingly, the median selling price for a house in Syracuse NY is a little less than this one coin has been priced (at least according to trulia.com).
