I just came across one of these and was wondering if it is normal for the head to be flipped from the obverse side? I'm not a collector but was wondering if I had a curiosity or a fairly normal coin.

Up and down, or left to right? If I'm not mistaken, this coin should be up and down for proper rotation

it is referred to as a coin alignment, one side is regular alignment and the other is upside down. it appears to be normal for the 1874 5 cents as well as on other earlier Canadian coins.

Thanks for the quick response to the question. If I understand correctly that "vintage" of coin would have the "head" 180 degrees out from the tail.

For all Canadian silver coins pre-1908 the default orientation is coin alignment as shown in dollarman's pics.
For all Canadian bronze coins and all silver coins 1908 and later the default orientation is medal alignment.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
