Hi guys...Love these coins...

Decided to branch out a little from my usual roman coins due to the recent posts of echizento and Bob L , and my love of history. So I picked up these three Elymais coins from ebay this week.

Hope you like them any comments appreciated..

I've done quite a lot of research about this civilisation from....What seems a limited amount of information out there. But maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

I'll post the coins with the sellers attributions as I've got a couple of doubts/questions.

Really appreciated if you can help...Thanks

Here goes number 1...

My-First-Elymais-Help-Needed-To-I.d.please

Assumed Unpublished and unlisted coin.

Similar to: Persia, Elymais, Southwest Iran

Period of direct Parthian administration

Second indeterminate king (de Morgan's Prince 'A') (ca. A.D. 210?)

Unit: AE Drachm, Mint/ unknown, undated

Obverse: Diademed and cuirassed bust with forked beard; crescent to right.

Reverse: Bust of Queen Ulfan or Artemis-Tyche (?), left.

Size : 11 - 13 mm

Weight: 2,2g

Reference : - Sear GIC 5919, Mitchiner ACW 721

Provenance: Ex German auction house.

OK...My doubt/questions...All seems ok except reverse to me shows Artemis standing right with bow and arrow allbeit more stylised ?!

Number 2...

My-First-Elymais-Help-Needed-To-I.d.please

Persia, Elymais, Southwest Iran

Kamnaskires-Orodes ca. 35 BC( v.Chr.) - 100 AD ( n.Chr.)

Unit: AE Drachm

Obverse: Diademed and cuirassed bust facing with long beard and large bunches

of hair at sides; pellet within crescent above anchor with two bars. Rosette pattern

within right tuft of hair.

Reverse: Field filled with ordered dashes.

Size : 13 - 15,5 mm

Weight: 3,6g

Reference : SGIC 5910, Mitchiner ACW 719v., Dobbins Kamnaskires Orodes III A/2

Provenance: Ex German auction house.

I think this is Orodes II ?! But I can only see 1 bar on the anchor symbol? And I think the obverse description is just a copy over from coin number 3?

Number 3...and my favourite..

My-First-Elymais-Help-Needed-To-I.d.please

Persia, Elymais, Southwest Iran

Kamnaskires-Orodes ca. 35 BC( v.Chr.) - 100 AD ( n.Chr.)

Unit: AE Drachm

Obverse: Diademed and cuirassed bust facing with long beard and large bunches of hair at sides; pellet within crescent above anchor with two bars. Rosette pattern within right tuft of hair.

Reverse: Field filled with ordered dashes.

Size : 13 - 15 mm

Weight: 3,6g

Reference : SGIC 5910, Mitchiner ACW 719v., Dobbins Kamnaskires Orodes III A/2

Provenance: Ex German auction house.

I think this attribution seems ok?

Wondering if Bob L or echizento could give me the van't Haaff reference numbers and where can I find out more info ..Many thanks in advance

Saludos Paul

I like them, I'm just starting to collect these also and don't fell that I known enough yet to ID them correctly. Bob knows much more about these and I'm sure he will come along soon and help. I am glad to see more interest in these eastern coin types.

Yay! More Elymaeans! Nice pick-up's, Paul. Muy bien hecho!

Using van't Haaff (the latest research on these):

First:
Prince A
Late 2nd to early 3rd centuries AD
Van't Haaff 19.1.1-1A
Obv: Bust left, wearing diadem, beard as two rows of dots
Rev: Artemis standing right, holding bow in one hand, plucking arrow from her quiver with the other hand

Second:
Orodes II
Early to mid 2nd century AD
Van't Haaff 13.3.2-2A
Obv: Bust facing forward, wearing tiara with no crest, vertical line and dots at rim (worn away here), pellet within crescent and anchor with one crossbar to right
Rev: Dashes with regular pattern

Third:
Kamnaskires-Orodes
Early to mid 2nd century AD
Van't Haaff 12.3.1-2A2
Obv: Bust with top hair tuft, upward side tufts, one crossbar on anchor, pellet within crescent at upper right
Rev: Dashes with regular pattern

Particularly nice example there!

Thanks Bob

Really nice to know I've got a pro out there if when I get stuck.

@ echizento...It was your posts that got me started on these coins...I'm sure you know a lot more than me

I'm a bit unsure about the value of theses coins and whether I paid over the odds or not..

9 euros
4,50 euros
7,50 euros...respectively...total 25,00 euros inc postage

How did I do ? Saludos Paul

You did extremely well, Paul. Most dealers would list the Kamnaskires-Orodes or Prince A at over 25 Euros by itself (just for the one coin). Wow...you got a great deal!

Thanks Bob that's really good to know...

I did check out some prices on v coins before bidding and thought the prices were good. There's a couple more sellers over here selling them at around 7/20 euros with various reverses ...eagles/bust of artemis etc

For example this one I like @ 7,00 euros
