Can someone tell me if this is a type 2. I have had a hard time telling and it looks different from the other type 1 sbas I have. Please help. Thanks!!

Since this is a 1981 SBA, this looks like a type 1 to me. The 1981 type 2 should have a pronounced top serif and yours appears virtually absent.

Thank you. I have been struggling with it. I have 3 SBA 1981 proofs and this one seemed different than the others. Does that typically happen?

Yes, variation is more the norm than the exception. Different die, different die states, and die damage are common, even among proof coins. An excellent reference for images of coin varieties is the PCGS price guide. They used to be stingy with their images but now offer them freely.
