New-U.-S.-Five-Dollar-Banknote
WASHINGTON (AP) - Abe Lincoln is getting a facelift, including a little color in his cheeks.

The new five-dollar bill comes out today, bearing the traditional image of the 16th president, but with some touches of color added to foil counterfeiters.

The government is shipping the bills to banks, which then distribute the money to businesses and eventually into the hands of the public.

I have tried all the Banks in my area and Brinks-
Brinks will receive them later today and start delivery tomorrow.

Has anyone managed to get one yet?

Obviously the counterfeiters have been busy for the US Treasury to take it this far! I wouldn't expect $5 to be counterfeited that much, although I've heard in Canada that is the most forged denomination. That big purple 5 is rather odd amidst the traditional feel of the reverse.

I'll try to post a picture later. I noticed how they just cut off part of the olive branch so they could fit lincolns head there. The paper feels alittle odd too, almost too bendable or soft, maybe its a new type of paper they use.

If you are having difficulty locating one of these, Stop trying the banks. Many of them won't have them until next week.

In south Florida, almost all of the larger supermarkets have them. Just go to the customer service counter and ask.

Supermarkets according to the Brinks drivers I spoke with use more cash than the banks.

There are some forum members and some lurkers who do not know what a block number is would you like to explain it or I can post the information.

I like to give the newer members a chance to post.

Ok, I posted part of this recently.
If you look at a $1 bill you will notice to the left of the portrait the Federal Reserve Seal, within the seal you there will be an A through an L which stands for one of the 12 federal reserve banks. Torward each of the 4 corners you will notice the federal reserve number which also stands for the same bank as the seal. So if there were an F which stands for Atlanta in the seal there would also be a 6 toward each corner.
I you look at the serial number you will notice that it starts with the letter which is the same as appears in the seal. The last letter designates the block therefore a serial number like F65331512K is said to be of the FK block. Therefore block letters are the letters at the start and finish of the serial numbers.
When looking at the current higher denominations the federal reserve district is designated by the second letter in the serial number, there a $10 note with a serial number of CB75394330B is from the B(New York ) District. You will also see a B2 on the left that represents the New York District. Further the first letter designates a series, the C in this case designates the series 2001. And finally this particular note would be the BB block.
Hope this clears it up for you. If you have CU (crisp and uncirculated) notes I'm always looking to add notes to my collection through trades.
Frank

Frank,
Thanks very much for that explanation. My grandfather has a note pricing guide which I have tried to use several times unsuccessfully. The guide contained no explanation of how to use said guide and I couldn't for the life of me figure out which letter I was supposed to match up to the book.
