1989 cents are Wide AM by design. There is no such thing as a 1998-D Wide AM, it simply cannot exist. In 1996, Denver opened its own die shop and all Denver dies are produced there. Prior to the opening of the shop, all dies were created in Philadelphia. The Wide AMs were created with the accidental substitution of a proof design die, something that could not possibly happen in Denver since they do not have any circulating design proof hubs or dies on site.
