Taking office in June 1946, he was the 17th longest-reigning monarch in history (among those whose rule dates are specific and verified). Although his record is far from spotless, he is generally held by the Thai people in high regard. His death officially makes Queen Elizabeth II the longest-serving living monarch. They must, as it is a serious crime to say something ugly about the king in Thailand. It can get you locked up for a long time. Even standing on a picture of the king can be see as an insult.
