Just purchased a 2014 (W) Silver Eagle that was graded MS69 at NGC. Upon inspection I found a scratch on the reverse of the coin that extends from the lowest olive branch leaf in the eagles claw almost all of the way to the "E" in FINE (about a little more than 1/8"). This is visible without any magnification. It is my understanding that in standard grading there should be no flaws visible to the naked eye in an MS69 graded coin. IS NGC just this sloppy in their grading or am I being picky? Went back to the NGC verification site and found that the scratch is actually visible in the NGC photos! #3855675-396

First, make sure it's a post-Mint scratch and not a die crack or die scratch.
That would save you money if you can make that determination.

Good call, I had a look at the NGC images and the scratch is an odd shape as most scratches on coins are usually straight this one is like an elongated "S".
This could well be a die crack

Since I am new to collecting, would a die crack or scratch add, detract or not effect the value of the coin? The scratch does take a 20-30 degree bend right about the middle. when viewed at an angle it does show as very shiny. It also shows minor variations from being straight on either side of the major bend.

Is the marking Raised or Incused ?
If it is raised then it is a die crack/break, If it is incused then it is PMD or damage.

It is Incused, looks very much like a scratch on the coin under magnification. Thx for the help.

figures. if it is a real scratch, it does not surprise me that they would grade it as a 69. from what I understand however, is it not NGC's policy to have 3 different people look at the coin? the first guy is the official grader, the next two are just graders who spend less time with the coin and are there to verify the original grader.

the reason I am grousing is because I submitted an expensive coin with NO DEFECTS OR SCRATCHES VISIBLE AT ALL, EVEN WITH MY MAGNIFYING GLASS, AND I GOT A 67!

I'll get over it in a decade or so. in the meantime, if you are interested on whether certain graders (like NGC) are consistent, visit....

it really surprises me that they over-graded your coin, if in fact it was a real scratch defect. these guys at NGC have no mercy at all when it comes to grading... I have found them to be WAY TOO DANG CONSERVATIVE... only my opinion tho...

the kicker is, that unless it is a striking/minting or error coin, that you can see the scratch on their own verification website! I agree with the others, if it is an incused scratch, which is the most reliable indicator that it is a real scratch or damage... heads must roll at NGC, guys grade the coins depending on how they are handling their hangovers...
