I found a 1920 one cent in a roll today. I have seen pictures but never the real thing until today.
I'm impressed by the strong strike and detail.
I went online, learned this isn't a rare coin, but to me it's one of the nicest coins I've ever found.

A large and a small penny were produced in 1920. Until 1936, the small cent (and 5 cents) were not very popular among french Canadian - with good reason.... Marc

Ok...now I'm curious--why were the small cents initially unpopular in Quebec? Did they look cheap by comparison?

It is the first that I heard they were unpopular, but if I had to guess it is because of the English spelling of ONE instead of using a numeral. They same would apply to the 5 cent coin.

Correct, this was a language issue.

Yes Kurt it does make sense. But somehow, it took more than 100 years for some people to realize that. Most of them are gone now.

If you do, you'll have to clean it up! Just kidding! No offense intended, if any was taken. That is one of my dad's old sayings. He would be 108, today. I would like a translation, so I might add it to my collection of French words and/or phrases. It would also come under the heading of "something new learned today", thus making the day worthwhile. Dick edit: I went elsewhere and found out what it said. "I do remember".

Dick- "Je me Souviens" is the motto of Quebec, but I had to look it up to get any sense of context. As one with non-Anglo ancestry, I'm a little bemused by the notion of N.America as "English-speaking", when clearly it has been multi-cultural from beginning of um...the European occupation.

Kurt, I found out what it means, along with a few other words, that I inquired about. My knowledge of Spanish, ( I think in Spanish, dream in spanish,), in other words I am fluent in spanish. I also speak in several others, but I am not fluent enough to carry on a conversation. Most of the languages, and dialects were from my "escapades" in many foreign countries! TYhey are also related, thru the colonializion by Different European countries, Chinese, and Japanese excepted. My Motto: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and learn to speak THEIR language! After all when we go to their country, WE are the "foreigners", not them! The American thinks that even when in a foreign country, that the people should speak Inglish! No wonder we are hated so much. My two centavos! Dick

"Habib", I just wanted to let you know, the package arrived today. Merci! So much for my French! I was surprised at the coins. I expected to see the general grade, and condition of the same type coins I have received, to date, from various places. These are very nice, and I expect to locate a folder that they will fit into. If not, the Plastic holder, that they are in at present will do, until I resolve the issue Dick. EDIT: "The problem was a language issue"! I winder if the word, "ONE" in French, has a meaning, that is offensive? Could that be the case? Dick

Dick, the issue is quite simple: currency circulating in Canada should mean the same thing whether it is read by French or English speaking people. This is not too difficult to accomplish. The 1937 "1 Cent" is bilingual as it is written and read the same way in both official languages in Canada. For modern Canadian notes "ONE" is accompanied with "UN", "TWO" with "DEUX", and so forth.
"ONE" isn't offensive. It is the lack of "UN" that is offensive.

Marc, thanks for your fine explanation. It is "discriminatory" in the way it was changed, and the French took offense. Understandable. Je me souviens! Ahora, si, comprendo. How difficult is the "ARC-SOFT" program to work with? Does it compare with the Photoshop, in that rspect? EDIT: Should the word" Souviens" be spelled as if "plural", or no? Is there a difference?
Dick
