This is an extension to my previous thread regarding surface particles but I made this a separate thread because it is much more serious.

Those specs cannot be removed... because they are surface defects. Pits. How many of them pits can you count?

RCM-Quality-Issue-#2---Surface-Pits

Modern technology wasn't meant to be that way. I've never seen this poor quality in 30 years.

I just returned a $50 Beaver that had some off-colour ... something ... that seemed to be struck into it. It is certainly disappointing, the number of funky coins I've received from RCM.... so far I only returned one for replacement and it's taken more than a month from them getting it back to flipping it and sending me the replacement (still waiting, actually)... Wondering how long it'll be before I see my beaver again....

I wonder if it's the planchet or die?

Good question. I can't imagine blanks or dies introducing pits like these.

I think debris are introduced due to poor machine maintenance.

RCM employees are held up against a steep production regimen. There is no time to be concerned about quality.

What's concerning, the collector doesn't notice the pits and at some future point in time when a collection is sold, because of that I can imagine some coins are valued at bullion while its alleged the owner mishandled the collection.

Thank you very much for using your excellent photographic skills and taking the time to demonstrate some very good examples, pits, dust, specs etc. An excellent learning....

@wizard1 - Completely agree here... nothing that kills the buzz / excitement of a new purchase more than finding a disappointment like this.

Again, there were some great comments in this thread: http://goccf.com/t/250540

This was an idea I had posted within the thread above:

Quote:
Crazy idea here: one of the benefits of the "new" Masters Club program is the ability to attain lower COA numbers... Instead of this / in addition to this, why doesn't the RCM employ a more stringent "double-check" process for MC members (Marketing Verbiage: Masters Club Members receive the assurances of low numbered COAs PLUS... a more stringent quality control process to ensure only the finest coins make it into the hands of members).

The cost of this "added benefit" would be absolutely nominal - the mint simply needs someone with a good set of eyes checking a portion of the produced coins, and certifying them as "MC worthy".

Any thoughts here? I know it's sad to think like above, but, based on the comments here, the suggestion might be worthwhile?

Two tier quality control? A government agency publicly admitting substandard NCLT is shovelled off to the masses, some of whom they hope might buy their way up to becoming MC members of tomorrow? Nope, don't think that would be a good solution.

But my question would be - How can it be the responsibility of the consumer to understand RCM's production issues in order to make suggestions?

I do think quality is going to become a bigger issue in the future though, noticing the one gold PF70 Star Trek that sold for twice as much, people reluctant to return defective items that are sold out, etc.
