Looks like a hammer and anvil
I can read 'PROTEGE' (?) but most of the text looks like latin
'...UARUM...'
'...SUS ET ...'
Kind of Nuremberg token?

I think this is it - a jeton of Dijon, France and dated 1591.

http://www.cgb.fr/dijon-maires-de--...59387,a.html

Titulature avers : (lis). PROBVS. ILLĘSVS. ET. INEXPVGNABILIS. .
Description avers : Une enclume aux armes de Dijon sur laquelle est une pointe de diamant que menace un marteau, au-dessous 1591 .

Titulature revers : * SVB. VMBRA. ALARVM. TVARVM. PROTEGE. ME. DOMINE .
Description revers : Ses armes dans un ecu incline, avec casque, lambrequins et cimier .

Nice work @brummagem! I spent a bunch of time on this and came up empty-handed.

Thank you Spence :) Yes it took some creative googling!

I've had some experience with deciphering partial legends which helped to piece it together.
