Japanese "Kuan Ei Tsu Ho" from between 1626-1859. Very common.

Indeed, it is a Kanei Tsuho. Simultaneously one of the most common yet interesting coinages from Japan. Some experts can, despite the long minting period, date varieties to single years or mints. In general, there are two easily distinguishable classes. The so called "Ko" (old) -Kanei and the "Shin" (new) -Kanei, the first being minted before 1656, the latter after approximately 1660 from the top of my head. The key is to look at the size of the characters, yours having smaller ones, typical of the Shin Kanei Tsuho, so it is of a later date. As I said, a real expert can ID it further, but I am certainly not an expert!

Yours is a new Kanei. The quickest way to determine age is to test it with a magnet. Japan forbade all foreign trade starting in the 1600s, when the Dutch attempted to colonize them. Their copper mines became exhausted, so they had to "cut" their coins with increasing amounts of lead, tin, and iron. Coins from before the 1750s are usually not magnetic; from 1750-1800 are sort of magnetic, and after 1800 they are close to 100% iron.

I am still a novice at these coins, even leaning on my catalog as a crutch. Yours has a dot on the reverse, which is very unusual for the new Kanei coins.

I really appreciate the information. What could the dot be on the back of it?
