Hello again everyone, I've got another piece for you experts to examine. I picked this up over the weekend and can't find an ID on it. Looks like a possible temple token that was turned into a bolo tie. It has an arabic date of 1524, which confuses me because that's in the future, unless they are referring to a gregorian date in Arabic numerals. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you all for looking!

Edit: After just posting it I saw the flag on the back looks Turkish and actually found another thread on the same token/medal, but it didn't come to any conclusions of what or why it is.

It is an Islamic pilgrim medal from Southeast Asia (Malaysia/Indonesia). They give them to pilgrims departing on the Hajj to Mecca, as a kind of lucky charm. They are also called "magic coins" for that reason; their use is frowned upon by the orthodox Islamic religious authorities, but it is hard to stamp out such a popular tradition. There is another piece exactly like yours (but without the mount) here on the zeno.ru database.

The meandering border on this piece is presumably intended to be reminiscent of the old British Trade dollar and/or Straits Settlements dollar, and this presumably meant to convey that it is made of silver. It almost certainly is not. The 1524 "date" is equally fictitious; it is either random numerals, or perhaps the number is numerologically significant in Islam (where numerology is likewise officially frowned upon, yet still popular in some regions).
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Wow, thanks for all the info Sap, I appreciate it. That is interesting about the edge of the coin. I didn't realize it's similarities to the Trade dollars til you said it. And yea, it's definitely not silver. Thanks again!
