I just acquired a Peruvian 1 centavo coin from 1963 which is made of pure zinc. The surface shows signs of a white material which I assume is corrosion. Do zinc coins require any special attention? If so, how should I store this coin?
Zinc is a terrible metal to make coins out of, it corrodes quickly and turns black over time. The best way to perserve these coins are not to touch them with bare hands, because the oil an moisture causes them to corrode. Inclosing it in a 2x2 should help.
