They are most likely looking at the DP lettering and either wanting one bad or thinking its something worth going after

it's a beautiful example of a strong doubled die obverse. I was really interested in this coin but tapped out at what it's at now. I have no idea how high this guy's max bid is though...should be interesting. I have an F-15 example..the doubling is really cool.

This is a choice example (for the variety) of what I call in my catalog The Mixed Font Variety. It is not a doubled die (the only 1881H obverse with multiple doubled lettering that isn't), but is instead a die in which multiple letters were repunched with letter punches of a different font. Note the Cs, for example. The die isn't rare, but an example in that condition is very desirable. How many people would pay that kind of money for it, though, is another question.

So far - only two bidders are fighting over that coin...

I'm very surprised at the bidding action. I've obtained my AU50-58 examples in the $100-$250 range. The ebay coin is EF40 and already $450. I have seen a dealer or two try to raise the prices of these at coin shows. Is it worth it? Yes, and more, but only if you're willing to hold onto it for a few years at least. Trying to re-sell it in this market for this price would be difficult.

Wow! I have a few that I paid only a few dollars for back in the good old early days before varieties got hot. That's what happens when two guys want the same thing.
