Had some more time to go through my collection (which I inherited many years ago) and came across what was hand written labeled as "SMS, Proofs" I have compared my 1964 coin with photos of authenticated 1964 SMS coins and the diagnostics and markings seem to be correct. Let me know what you think? Note: the coin has what seems to have Vaseline or similar on it so the photos don't show the color quite accurately. i will try to take some additional photos as well

I see a heavily cleaned coin. The marks under the"t" on your coin looks like damage.

I agree, just looks like a cleaned coin, although I may be missing something. Those marks could easily just have been cleaning marks...

The color of the coin and complete lack of luster indicates that it has been cleaned, it is not an SMS strike.

Not only is it a regular business strike but it's worn and cleaned .

to the forum! Quote:1964 Experimental SMS Cent These coins weren't discovered until around 1993-1994. We don't know for sure why these coins were minted but it was most likely the result of the mint's search for an alternative to the proof cents that were not minted from 1965 through 1967. These coins show greater details and sharper strikes than the business strikes of the same year, yet do not have the reflective shine of the proof cents. No one knows for sure how many of these experimental coins were minted, but it is estimated that the number is less than 50. Even though it is believed that the mintage number is very low for these special cents, there are most likely more to be discovered. http://www.lincolncentsonline.com/r...rieties.html The marks pointed out by the red arrows on your coin do not match the known die markers for the 1964 SMS cents.
