I am trying to hone my grading skills and see if I should purchase this coin. It is being sold on ebay right now. Here it is: I am thinking AU58 cleaned. What are your thoughts?

I personally stay away from great southern coins cause their photos usually are hiding stuff, like cleaning damage etc. be warned.

I've heard that from other sources as well as from other people who post on this site. Guess I will pass on the coin and find another one.

its overly dipped which hurts the value. the reverse clash is fully awesome nonetheless.

The mark to the left of the face is in the die, probably from the wing on reverse. The coin has MS detail but we all know about GS coins and their photo work. If you can get it for AU money you should be okay. Personally, I like the coin but it has most likely been cleaned at some point over the years.

Quote: Take note of that abrasion area just left of her face. That's not abrasion. That's the result of a die clash. Notice the same thing in front of the eagle's face on the reverse. But Great Southern DOES have a bad rep and I believe it's deserved. And for the (suspected) asking price I wouldn't touch it unless it were slabbed. That would also solve the "cleaned" question.

Agree this is a typical GS offering, but it does have a certain appeal.

also looks like the reverse is filled at STATE(S) which makes it Reverse P and although this is a very common die (LM-6) this is a later stage considering the significant clashing. Too bad its so dipped and lifeless on the surfaces.

dsfree nailed the attribution.
This isn't a seller I'd buy raw coins from based on the sheer number of dissatisfied customers that have had bad experiences doing so.

I would like to see this coin in hand ...
And the price would have to be right

Cleaned (dipped) AU details coin with light porosity and heavy die clash. Will almost certainly look worse in hand based on seller's rep. It would not slab clean at a TPG.

I see no luster. That means cleaned/overdipped in my book. GSC is a seller to stay away from

AU details, cleaned. As many have mentioned, it's a GS coin so it is going to look a whole lot better in the pictures than in hand. They have some photoshop wizards over there...
