Actually, the slippery slope was initiated in 1998 when the RCM starting striking privy-marked SMLs for private customers willing to buy a minimum quantity (25,000). In 1998, they struck custom SMLs for Dillon-Gage and MTB Bank, two firms that dealt in high volumes of precious metal products. Privately-commissioned coins have continued from that point forward.

I almost jumped in but decided against it solely because of the price. This is a very unique subscription and I am sure that when all 5 are placed together, the set would look magnificent.
I already have the new big coin and some other series on order so this one will have to sit out of my ordering.
To those who have ordered this series, congratulations because it truly is a unique set.

This coin just came up on the mint again for $1099. Now the mint wants market value!

I purchased the second coin on impulse and then I gave my head a shake.I have just cancelled the second coin (the Cougar) because of that reason. First they look the same as the grizzly bear but much uglier. Second they increased the price without letting us know, and third it's another commission coin by Steve Bromberg. Oh and there's a fourth I don't know what the heck you want to call it, a piece of art or a coin or just plainly a blob of silver thrown on top of a coin and call it unique. What's next coins with miniature royal doulton statuettes. when will it end.

@Looney4Numi Too funny! I feel I should stop buying coins as I'm loosing interest on all the crap that's coming out of the RCM and other mints. I'm overwhelmed with so many coins coming out every year and most of them are repeats of bears,beavers, ducks, deer, flowers, same old sport coins... I can go on and on and on. I think the mint is running out of new coins design so that's probably why there are so many repeats. Coin collecting for me is getting stale. After thirty plus years of collecting and bought everything under the sun I"m loosing the passion I once had. I am selling some of my collection On ebay (Coin Haven) and everything is at discounted price if anyone is interested until the end of the month.

Dropped by the Vancouver Mint Boutique the other day and saw the Grizzly coin in person.
Looks much better in person than in the pictures. It is not a blob of metal as I thought. There is enough detail to see ears and mouth and fur of the grizzly bear.
Still, is it a coin or a sculpture? If you put in on display in your home no one will even know it is a coin since the coin is on the base of the sculpture. People will say, "that's a nice little sculpture you have there".

Just received my Grizzly Bear figurine, statue, or coin what ever you want to call it and I have to tell you it is very impressive. Unfortunately I had to return it due to a crack on the bottom of the case. Getting a replacement. It is way nicer looking in hand. Will put this out on display. I still refuse to buy the rest of the series due to a $100.00 jump in price. Quality control is the RCM's downfall. They must improve or there will be a lot of customers leaving the hobby of collecting. IMHO.

@yingyang
The quality of the mint has significantly gone down hill, especially in the last two years. Not only the quality but also the website. I know they changed the president of the mint recently, perhaps that has contributed a little more to their problems. Anyways I might just join you (yingyang) in the near future if it doesn't improve.
